How long have you been singing with St. Mary’s Choir?

I have been singing with St Mary’s choir for a few months.

What do you love about singing in the Choir?

I love the sense of community and how everyone is supporting each other. When you're singing, it's just really fun.

How do you think singing has helped to develop you?

It helps you to explore yourself, different elements of your personality, as well as your range and how well you are developing at singing.

It has also helped me to develop my lower register. I was originally a soprano, which is the highest register, and then it goes alto, tenor, and bass. The other members of the choir in my section have helped me to explore that and make sure I'm confident in what I'm doing. It helped me to develop my lower voice and I'm just above bass now.

What are your favourite memories of being part of the Choir?

Being part of the choir has allowed me to go to various places, such as Hereford Cathedral. This was quite a quite a new experience as I had only been to one proper cathedral evensong before. We got to sing alongside their church choir which was a very good experience.

Being on the BBC Young Chorister of the Year was also a really fun experience. I got to semi-finals and I was with four other people who were also really good at singing. It helped me to find out that I am actually really quite good at it; it was quite a fun experience and I'm thankful that I got to take part.

Would you recommend singing in the Choir to others? Why?

I'd recommend it as it's very a fun thing to do. It's a community than anything else, and it’s fun being around people who are similar to you. You sing alongside professionals who know what they're doing, so if you're ever stuck then it's very useful to have someone there who will always help you. I'm always part of a group who are always moving forward and learning together, which is a very good experience.
